VA Home Loans in Leavenworth, KS

Leavenworth, KS has a long and storied history with the U.S. Military, the Army in particular. The City is the first incorporated city in the state of KS and began growing because of Fort Leavenworth, the oldest active military base west of the Mississippi River. The base was established in 1827 by Colonel Henry Leavenworth and the city founded in 1854, and was home to such western heros as ‘Wild’ Bill Hickok and ‘Buffalo’ Bill Cody. It is home to the Combined Arms Center, which is the Intellectual Center of the U.S. Army and the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College. Perhaps the most well known attribute of the city of Leavenworth, besides the base, is the Federal Prison and the Military’s only maximum security Penitentiary.

In 2008, a local news station reported that underneath the city there appears to be a city underneath the city of Leavenworth, a series of underground tunnels and cut aways that may have been used for the slave-trade, fugitives or other commerce.
