Whiteman Air Force Base

Whiteman Air Force Base (AFB) is located in west-central Missouri, 70 miles outside of Kansas City, MO. Whiteman AFB was officially opened in 1942 under the original name Sedalia Glider Base, then several names thereafter and received its current name on December 3, 1955 in honor of Sedalia, Missouri native Lieutenant George A. Whiteman. Most notable for the B-2 Spirit Stealth Bomber, planes from Whiteman AFB have been involved in some spectacular air attacks all across the globe throughout its existence.

Lieutenant Whiteman was one of the first American airmen killed in the attack on Pearl Harbor, December 7, 1941 when his fighter aircraft was struck down during take off at Bellows Air Field. Throughout the 20th century, Whiteman AFB saw many tenants come and go but is currently headquarters to the 509th Bomb Wing division, operator of the B-2 Spirit Bomber that has seen four war campaigns since its first debut to the base in 1993.
