Fort Riley, a United States Army installation located on over 100,000 acres in Northeast Kansas, has a rich history in America’s military presence dating back to its establishment in 1853. The base has a rich history dating back to the 1800s and the Santa Fe Trail. Today, there are approximately 25,000 that call Fort Riley home; it’s where the 1st Infantry Division is stationed. As the years have gone on, so have the developments. The base continues to undergo renovations and additions such as a headquarters, an army hospital, central energy plant, clinic and even a dining facility.
The fort was named for Major General Bennett C. Riley who led the first military escort along the Santa Fe Trail and was established as a military post to protect trade and people along the Oregon, California, and Santa Fe trails.
It is also the site where Custer took charge of the 7th Calvary Regiment before departing for the West and the numerous campaigns they partook in. Fort Riley has been a vital key player in the wars since the 19th century and is once again home to The 1st Infantry Division of the US Army, after a 10-year relocation to Germany. The 1st Infantry Division or Big Red One, nicknamed after its shoulder patch, has seen continuous service since its organization in 1917 and was first home at Fort Riley from 1955-1996.
