Can any branch of the military apply for a VA loan?

A common question we hear around the office – Can any branch of the military apply for a VA loan? Simply put – YES! VA loans are a program for any veterans who serve currently, or have served in the past, for any division of the Armed Forces. It’s not something privy just to the Army, Navy or Air Force. Anyone who’s served our country and enlisted may be eligible for a VA Loan.

My Top Military Movies

Forrest Gump would have been eligible for the VA Loan.

Me and my team of VA Loan Specialists aren’t the only ones who have a particular interest in veterans and the military. Some who make the movies for the silver screen also have quite an affinity to them, too. Over the years, movies featuring story lines set in wartime, or about veterans in general, have topped box office charts and moved a generation. Some give an “inside look” into the intense life of a soldier; others try to bring humor or parody into an underlying grim story line.Whether a comedy or drama, one thing stay true: veterans are the heroes of the world.

My Fave Flicks Featuring Veterans

While there are hundreds of films out there that feature war, soldiers and life surrounding war – there are always some that I go back to as my favorites. Some are “serious” war movies, others feature scenes of war that stick in my head. All of these films are “go tos” when I want to watch a movie about veterans.

Hurt Locker

No wonder this 2008 movie received 6 Academy Awards, including Best Picture. It’s one of the most moving, real-life stories of elite Army soldiers and the realities they face while on the battlefield. Read more about Hurt Locker.

Saving Private Ryan

An oldie but goodie, this 1998 film is one of everyone’s favorite war movies and it’s not just because of stars Tom Hanks and Matt Damon. The plot tells the story of a WW2 group of soldiers traveling to retrieve a soldier whose brothers have died, unbeknownst to him. The movie is emotional, inspirational and moving and gives you a true appreciation for those who sacrifice so much. Read more about Saving Private Ryan.

Black Hawk Down

This 2001 war film set in Somalia is the real-life story of a 1993 near-fatal mission for Army Rangers who set out to “leave no man behind” as two U.S. Blackhawk helicopters were shot down. Read more about Black Hawk Down.

Forrest Gump

Okay – so we know it’s not a war movie exactly, but the scenes from Vietnam and the moving storyline in this 1994 award-winning film shaped a nation’s view of war (like it or not.) Forrest Gump played by Tom Hanks, a veteran who served overseas, depicts relationships, friendships, struggles and battles Vietnam soldiers faced in a fictional, lighthearted way. No, not a war movie – but it still depicts the bravery and heroism of U.S. veterans; therefore, it made our list. Oh – and it won Best Picture. Read more about Forest Gump.

Inglourious Bastards

Now hear us out. While this isn’t the “traditional” war movie – Quentin Tarantino does a pretty good job of getting you in tune with what could have been happening in Nazi Germany… well maybe. This film is strange, yet holds your attention as you watch revisionist history in the making and wonder “what if” plans like that would have succeeded. We aren’t the only ones who liked it – it was nominated for Best Picture in 2011 (although it lost to the Hurt Locker.) Read more about Inglourious Bastards.

War Movies and the VA Loan

So why tell you my favorite war movies? Well, if you’re a fellow movie fan – here are some of my top suggestions. But even if you’re not – war movies make me think of VA loans. Some plot lines are fictional, others are not, but regardless – many of the main characters in my top war movies would be eligible for a VA Loan. Those who serve in active duty (in any branch of the military) for at least 90 days during war are eligible. It’s a great benefit to our heroes.

Even if you didn’t star on the big screen, you’re still eligible for some pretty great benefits because of your sacrificed to our country. While I can’t guarantee the paparazzi, I can guarantee that me and my team of LA loan specialists will take care of you if you’re looking for assistance using your VA loan.

What is the VA Loan?

If you’ve ever been in the military, you might be eligible for the VA loan. Yes, even if you served in Vietnam some time ago. Or, if you signed up right out of high school because college wasn’t right for you just quite yet. The VA loan is a program offered by the Federal government to those who’ve been in the service. It’s one of the VA programs available that offers big advantages when it comes time to buy real estate. And even if your “day job” requires you to sit in a cubicle now rather than trek the sands of Afghanistan – this loan program could still apply to you.

How to use the VA Loan

If you’re interested in using your VA loan benefits to buy a house, please contact me. As a VA loan specialist, I can walk you through the process and help you get the paperwork you’ll need. It’s relatively simple when you have a professional VA mortgage expert coaching you along the way. Notice I said professional –¬† not drill sergeant.

The VA loan advantages are many – zero down payment is required, no mortgage insurance (PMI), relaxed credit requirements. However another feature many don’t realize is that the VA loan benefit NEVER EXPIRES. It’s not a one-and-done situation where if you use the VA loan benefit to buy your first house, you can never use it again. Nope – not at all.

If you’re moving your primary residence, you can always use the VA loan to finance your property. No expiration date. No limits on the number of time it’s used. As long as the house you’re buying is where you’ll call “home” you should be good to go.
